About Ruth and Thomas Martin.
Ruth Martin (1914-2000) and Thomas Martin (1909-1984) were a husband-and-wife team who translated over 40 opera librettos from European languages into English. In the years before the projection of translations as supertitles above opera stages, their translated librettos were regularly performed in opera houses throughout the English-speaking world and featured in numerous television and radio broadcasts. As a conductor, Thomas was affiliated with the Metropolitan Opera House, New York City Opera, St. Louis Opera, Central City Opera, Lake George Opera, and many other companies.
