About Searching

You may search for a single term or phrase by entering it into the first search box. You do not need to put quotes around a phrase. Words are truncated automatically so that a search for "car" will return items about cars but also Carnegie. If you enter a space after your search term "car " it will search for the exact match for car.

You may restrict your search to a part of a record - author, title, subject, imprint (publication information) - by choosing an alternative in the pull down box. You must do this for each term entered. For example you could search for "steel " in the title fields AND "United States Steel" in the author field. Do not include quotes around your term.

You may restrict your search to a date or a range of dates found on the imprint of the work. This usually applies to books and monographs. Not all items from a particular date may be retrieved this way. If the date is not explicitly listed in the field it will not retrieve items.

A search using the operator AND will produce records that include All of the search terms entered. A search using OR will include records that have either one term or the other. A search using NOT will include items that include the first term but not the second term.

Printing a List of your Results

As you search through this catalog you may click on the checkboxes next to the items that you wish to add to a list for printing when you are done. At the end of the page a list of the current contents of your list is provided. If you want to remove any item from your list uncheck the box. Just above your current print list you will then have the options to return to the search page for an additional search, to view additional items that matched your query (if there are more than 100 items that matched) or to display a list of checked items with basic bibliographic and location information. You can then use the Print function of your browser to print your list.
