Other Digital Libraries
The number of digital libraries is quickly expanding as information and digital technologies merge. The DRL is happy to provide links to a few reference sites that are devoted to documentation and access of digital library sites.
- American Memory (Library of Congress): Focuses on digitizing the Library of Congress' unique American history holdings. Major components of the Library's National Digital Library Program, are multimedia collections of digitized documents, photographs, recorded sound, moving pictures, and text from the Library's Americana collections.
- Clearinghouse of Image Databases: An online directory of image databases hosted by the University of Arizona Library. The Clearinghouse is targeted at professionals working with imaging technology, librarians, archivists, metadata specialists, database administrators and others who are planning or developing databases containing digital objects.
- Digital Initiatives Database (ARL): A registry for descriptions of digital initiatives in or involving libraries. The database includes a wide variety of digital projects, and provides access to initiatives underway, highlighting technical features, policy choices, and subject matter of the content.
- Digital Collections Registry (DLF): A web-searchable database of Digital Library Federation members' public-domain, online digital collections.
- Directory of Digitized Collections (UNESCO/IFLA): This site offers a listing of major digitized heritage collections and on-going digitization programmes worldwide. It is hoped that this site will provide a single focal point of information on digitized collections and will act as the 'Memory of the World' virtual library offering direct access to those collections.
- IMLS Digital Collections Registry: A gateway to digital collections funded through the IMLS National Leadership Grant program and a resource for educators and cultural heritage professionals. You will find here a fascinating array of digital collections from all subject areas - art to science, literature to home economics - and from all types of institutions such as museums, libraries, and historical societies.
- The SGML/XML Academic Applications Web Page: Provides a list of digital collections and descriptions of technologies utlizing SGML and XML.

Digital library production requires much planning and research. Listed below are a few sites that document the steps, tools and issues relevant to creating digital libraries.
- Collaborative Digitization Program: An in-depth, well-organized site that provides links to major web resources on digitizing collections. It is designed to guide administrators of digital projects to information on scanning, creation of metadata, and legal issues.
- Berkeley Digital Library SunSITE: Maintains a list of general resources and points to sites which inform users on the creation of digital libraries.
- Digitization Resources Online: A complete A-Z guide for information on digitization resources prepared and maintained by the Special Collections Digital Lab, a division of USM Libraries at The University of Southern Mississippi. Includes a working bibliography on digitization issues.
- Digital Library Research (D-Lib): Links to major cooperative projects, funding and coordinating agencies, and associated activities in digital library research.
- Ready Reference (D-Lib): A collection of gateways for digital library research and subject areas. Also listed are links to calendars of events, technical reports, and the D-Lib Digital Library Research site.
- IFLA's Digital Libraries: Resources and Projects: Links to periodicals, conferences, organizations, and projects devoted to the development of digital libraries and the appropriate technology. There are also links to sites concerned with digital library cataloging and archives issues, and metadata resources.
