Description
The tympanum of the north nave portal contains New Testament scenes which occurred after the Resurrection of Christ. In the upper register, Christ appears in the midst of the apostles. All the figures are tall and slender. All are barefoot and wear long garments with many folds. All the heads are missing. Christ is in the center- he is the tallest figure and has a halo with a cross on it, He faces the viewer and raises both hands. There are six apostles on Christ's right (the viewer's left). Four of their halos appear on the back of the register (the shorter apostles halos are not shown) Two of the apostles hold books. The apostles appear to be looking at Christ- all have expressive gestures.
Also visible in this image are the inner archivolt of the tympanum which has foliate medallions.
There is some scholarly dispute about the subject matter of this upper register- some say it is Christ appearing to the apostles (Luke xxiv 33-49) or the Ascension.
