Description
Two elephants, one male and one female, stand facing one another-one either side of this capital. The fronts of their heads, which are in the front of the capital, have been broken off. Their small ears and tapering skull indicate that the model was probably an Indian rather than an African elephant. Salet suggests that they may have been copied from a design on an Oriental fabric that had reached Vézelay. (The model could also have been a Bestiary). Meuniers suggests that they are symbols of Adam and Eve. Salet: Number 54 Location: North side of nave. West side of fifth arcade pier.
