Description
Classic or Symbolic theme? The Four Winds or Beekeepers
On the front of the capital, tow stooping figure face one another. The one at right wears a short garment and has long hair. The one at left is nude but wears a pointed, conical cap. Each holds a conical object near its base, with the larger end pointing upward. The texture of these objects suggests baskets.
On the left side of the capital is another stooping figure wearing a conical hat and a short garment. It holds a large bellows pointing downwards.
Surrounding them are foliage and grapes.
Salet: Number 22
Salet identifies the figures on the capital as the four winds and mentions a similar capital at Cluny. Other interpretations include sieving grain (Viollet-le-Duc and Terret), grape harvesting scene (Porée), and scenes of beekeeping (Aubert, Deschamps and Despiney)
Location: South side of nave. West side of fifth arcade pier.
