Description
These tall, thin figures are in the center of the left side of the lintel. They appear to be moving toward the right. The five figures to the left carry archery equipment. One has a drawn bow and the figure leading the group has a quiver hanging from his shoulder and appears to be leaning on a longbow. These figures are barefoot and wear short tunics.
To the right are figures with longer garments. Directly to the right of the archer is a figure holding a bowl or basket (of fruit? grapes?) , in front of it is a figure holding a large, round object (a loaf of bread?). Both of these figures do not carry these objects in their bare hands, but instead in pieces of cloth (hems of their garments?) . To the right are two figures, a shorter one with its hand extend, touching the arm of the figure in front of it. This taller figure holds a rope from which dangles a large fish.
Some authors, such as Mouilleron, identifies these figures as Greeks or Greeks. Feldman, however argues that they are hunters and agricultural workers brining tithes to the church. Katzenellenbogen thought the lintel derived from the prophecies of Isaiah. Several authorities have seen allusions to the crusades and pilgrimages, over and above the literal meaning of the figures.
