Description
Old Testament theme: Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:1-7) At left is the nude figure of Adam holds his right hand to his jaw while his left hand clasps his right elbow. At center is Tree of Life, in which the Serpent is entwined. The serpent is quite thin and has a pronounced pattern on its back. The end of its tail (at bottom) crosses Eve’s leg. The serpent hold out a bunch of grapes (rather than the usual apple) to Eve. Eve (right), takes the grapes in her right hands, as she clutches leaves to in front of her abdomen with her left hand. Surrounding the central scene are more vines with bunches of grapes. Many scholars think that this capital was reused from an earlier structure. Note that the same subject matter is used in capital # 93. Salet: Number 65 Location: North side of nave. North side of eighth arcade pier from the west Alternate search terms (See text above for synonyms): snake, naked
