Denis was a missionary and a bishop of Paris. He was beheaded ca. 275 AD. He was considered the patron saint of France, and a famous royal abbey near Paris was dedicated to him.
He is shown as a bearded, middle aged man with a halo, wearing a mitre and carrying a crozier. He makes a gesture of blessing.
