3: Lambert about to be beheaded
Houvet identifies this martyr as Lambert, Bishop of Maestricht during the late 7th century. He also served as a missionary to the area that is now the Kempenland and the Brabant in Belgium. There are several versions of his martyrdom. In the most common, Lambert opposed a liaison between Pepin, Mayor of the Palace, and a common woman named Alpais (Charles Martel was their offspring). Alpais appealed to one of her relations, a man called Dodo, who had Lambert slain in the chapel of Sts. Cosmas and Damian in Liège.
A small man in a short garment stands at left with a sword in his hand. He lists his hand toward the head of a bishop (mitre and episcopal vestments) who sits at right with an open book on his lap. At the extreme right is a large square object covered with a cloth- probably an Altar.
