Description
The Miracles of the Virgin Window
Delaporte no. 9, Deremble-Manhes no. 38
Panel 5: The Virgin Enthroned with Angels
The Virgin (crowned, haloed) sits frontally at center. She holds a scepter in one hand while with the other she holds the Christ Child, who sits on her lap facing frontally. With one Hand, he makes a gesture of blessing; with the other, He holds an object (book? a globe?).
One interpretation of this panel is that it is a reference to a miracle in which the Virgin - in 1194 in answer to prayers for healing - descends to the construction site, leaves a statue of the Virgin and Child, and then goes back to Heaven.
On either side stands an angel (haloed, barefooted) with multi-colored wings. Each holds a censer with one hand while extending a small red object toward the Virgin the other (an offering to the Virgin?).
Delaporte suggests that this forms one composition with panels 4, 6, and 7.
