Panel 13- Herod orders the Massacre of the Innocents
This panel and panels 14 and 15 form a three-panel scene of the Massacre of the Innocents (Matthew 2:16-18).
At left, King Herod (crowned, holding a scepter) sits on a throne. In front of him stand two men with large swords. With one hand, he gestures toward the slaughter in the adjacent panel (14). Either he is ordering the Massacre, or hearing about it after it is finished.
