Creation: Animals, Adam, Eden?
Date
c 1194-1230
Description
North Porch, Central Portal
Outer Archivolts with figures of God from Genesis (outer) and the Creation of the Earth and the Fall of Man (inner)
Lower Left : God on the Sixth Day of Creation (Genesis 24-5)
God (crossed halo, bearded) sits, raising one of his hands toward the animals in the inner archivolt.
Lower Right: Creation of animals on the Sixth Day of Creation (Genesis 24-5)
There are several animals in this scene. At front is a lion; behind is a creature with a down turned horn (a goat?), a horse-like creature and another unidentified animal. (Note that the two panels above this may also represent the creation of the animals)
Upper Left: God on the Sixth Day of Creation (Genesis 24-5)
God (crossed halo, bearded) sits, raising one of his hands toward the inner archivolt.
Upper Right: Unidentified scene
This appears to be a scene with trees and with an empty space in the middle. This could be a bad restoration, the Garden of Eden, or a symbol of man’s place in the world.
