Panel 8: The infant Nicholas refuses his mother’s milk
According to his Life, the newborn Nicholas would drink his mother's milk only once on Wednesday and once on Friday.
Nicholas’ parents sit under an arcade with carved capitals and curtains hanging from the arches. At left, the woman holds her naked breast with one hand, offering it to the baby Nicholas who sits on her knee. The child (haloed) turns away from the proffered breast with a gesture of rejection. The bearded man seated at right wears a pointed cap, a tunic, and a mantle fastened at the neck with a brooch. To the left of the woman is a candle in an ornate candelabrum (perhaps indications of Nicholas’ parents’ wealth).
