The Passion Window
Delaporte no. 3, Deremble-Manhes no. 51
Panel 08-The Deposition (Matthew 27:53-6l; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-55; John 19:38-42)
At center, two men (Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus) are removing the body of Christ (halo with cross, loincloth) from the cross. The nails have been removed from His hands and His body sags forward and to the left. It is being supported by Joseph of Arimathea (long white hair and beard, wearing a round cap). He holds the body in a cloth (this recalls the medieval custom of not holding precious religious objects directly, but in a cloth). To the right of the cross kneels Nicodemus, wearing in a round cap, using pincers to pull a nail from one of Christ’s feet. There is a nail through each foot (this is a Byzantine convention- most western Crucifixion scenes have one nail through both feet).
The Virgin Mary (halo) stands to the left, holding one of Christ’s hands to her cheek. St. John (halo) stands to the right.
