Description
The Aaron and Censing Angel Window
Deremble-Manhes no. 101, Delaporte no. 121
Three scenes in lozenge-shaped panels.
The bottom scene shows a group of people, probably the donors. To the left stands a woman wearing fashionable 13th century garments, including a flat hat (tourette) with a chin strap (barbette). The next figure to the right is a beardless young man in a long garment, with a pouch on a strap over his shoulder. To the right are two smaller figures- probably children. The figure in the rear is a boy. In the foreground is a young girl with unbound hair holding a censer and an object, which appears to be a bowl or chalice. At top right hangs what appears to be a boot. All but the young girl look up and raise their hands toward the figure of the Virgin and Child in the adjacent Window (The Annunciation, Visitation, Virgin and Child Window, Deremble-Manhes no. 100, Delaporte no. 120). There is an inscription GAVFRIDVS.
Because the man does on hold a sword or heraldic arms, Delaporte believes he is the head of the donors’ guild, the shoemakers.
The middle scene shows Aaron (inscription AARON) sits on an elaborate throne. He is bearded, wears a mitre and holds a rod with a flower-shaped finial. He looks and raises his hands toward the figures of the Virgin and Child in the adjacent window (The Annunciation, Visitation, Virgin and Child Window, Deremble-Manhes no. 100, Delaporte no. 120). At the upper right is a tree hung with fruit.
Restored in the 16th century.
