Panel 24: Fall of the idols
When Hermolaus and Pantaleon pray before Emperor Maximien, there is an earthquake and a messenger arrives to say that the idols in the temples have fallen to the ground and broken.
At right is the temple. Within it are the idols, small nude gold figures similar to other depictions of idols at Chartres. They are breaking to pieces and toppling off of the columns on which they had stood. At left is a man who carries a club and wears a parti-colored tunic (usually associated with disreputable people). This is probably the messenger going to tell the emperor of the fall of the idols
