Panel 1: Donor: cleric in prayer before a statue of the Virgin and Child
The donor kneels in prayer before a statue of the Virgin and Child which has an elaborate base with arched openings. Mary, crowned and haloed, sits frontally on a throne holding a scepter in one hand while the Christ Child sits on her knee. The Child (halo with a cross) holds a book in one hand as He gazes at the donor.
Much restoration was done on this panel in 1921: the head of the Virgin and most of the patron. Because of the extensive restoration, scholars have not speculated on the identity of the patron.
