Description
West Façade, Left Frieze, Life of Mary and Infancy of Christ, Right Side of Left Portal
Note the relationship of the capital frieze with the architectural elements above and below it.
This image shows several scenes. From the right are figures from:
13: Visitation.
14: The Nativity of Christ.
15: The Annunciation to the Shepherds.
16: The Three Magi before Herod.
Heimann says that the sources for this cycle are the Protevangelium of James and the Homilies of the Greek monk Jacobus Kokkinobaphos (Heimann, pp. 77-8). Spitzer sees this part of the frieze a manifestation of the local cult of Mary centered in the crypt rather than the more national “official” one celebrated in the upper church (Spitzer, pp. 137-8).
