Description
North Porch, Central Portal
Left Jambs: Melchisodech-socle
This figure is the Old-Testament High Priest Melchisedech (Melchizedek) who blessed Abraham and made an offering of bread and wine (foreshadowing the Eucharist) in Genesis 14: 17-20. On the socle below him is an animal that Houvet identifies as a lamb.
Kidson and other scholars believe this statue, and the statue of Peter opposite it, were added later, when the butlers was cut back to allow the construction of the North Porch/ (Kidson, p. 33).
