Panel 3-The Last Supper (Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25;Luke 22:15-38)
A long table is set parallel with the plane of the panel- on the tablecloth are various items of crockery, cutlery and food. Among them are bread and wine (Eucharist) and a platter with a fish in it (a symbol of Christ since Early Christian times). Christ (halo with a cross, barefoot) sits behind the table center with St. John (haloed) leaning against his chest. One of Christ’s hands is raised in blessing; with the other, he reaches toward Judas (barefooted, no halo), who sits in front of the table to the right. Judas reaches toward the plate. At left, two other apostles (haloes, barefooted) sit behind the table. To the right sit two other apostles (haloes, barefoot) raising their hands. At the far right, is another figure holding a cup.
Above is an arcade above which towers and a building are visible, a reference to the interior setting of the Last Supper, in the Upper Room.
