The Pantaleon Window
Delaporte no. 40, Deremble-Manhes no. 11
Panel 1. Donor: Deacon Nicholas Lescine
At left kneels a tonsured man wearing the vestments of a deacon. He is identified by the inscription NICOLAVS LESCINE. Delaporte says that in the early 13th century, there was a sub-deacon named Nicholas Lisesne mentioned in the Cartulary of Chartres as early as 1223- he died in 1255. The deacon in the window raises his hands in prayer to an image of the seated Virgin holding the Christ Child the “Throne of Wisdom”) Mary is crowned; both Mary and Christ are haloed and make a gesture of blessing. Delaporte notes the similarity of this statue to others in donor panels at Chartres- he suggests that they represent a statue of the Virgin and Child near the main altar at Chartres.
