Description
North Porch, Central Portal, Right Jambs: The Old Testament Prophet Elijah (right)
At left is a partial view of the figure of Peter. At right is the figure of Elijah. Though technically this figure is not on the jambs, but within the porch between the center and the right portal, many scholars (including Katzenellenbogen) group it with the central portal jamb figures.
Man with long hair and beard, holding a scroll that probably once had an inscription. On the socle, a small figure of a man holding a long object (and perhaps a round shield with a boss?) looks upwards toward Elijah. Katzenellenbogen believes this represents Elisah catching hold of Elijah’s cloak as he ascends to Heaven in the chariot of fire (II Kings, 2:11-13). According to Katzenellenbogen, this prefigures the Ascension of Christ (Katzenellenbogen, p. 65).
Compare with figure of Elisha on the opposite side of the portal.
