3. Ignatius between two lions
Ignatius (also called Theophorus) was the third bishop of Antioch. He was condemned to death by the Emperor Trajan. He was taken to Rome and slain by wild beasts in the Flavian amphitheater sometime between 98 and 117 AD.
Ignatius, wearing a mitre and episcopal vestments stand frontally at center. His palms are pressed together in prayer. On either side, a beast (probably a lion) leaps on him.
