Description
Thomas the Apostle Window
Delaporte no. 46, Deremble-Manhes no. 23
Panel 26: Pilgrims sleep near Thomas’s tomb (center)
This scene takes place in an interior- there is a doorway at left and an arcade in the background. Three lamps hang from each arch of the arcade. Thomas's tomb is at center, parallel to the picture plane. It is made of masonry and rests on a low arcade. Four or more figures sit on the floor around the tomb- at least one appears to be sleeping. This probably shows the medieval practice of “incubation”, where ill people seeking a cure from a saint spent a night sleeping near the relics. Compare to the scene showing St. Nicholas’ tomb on the tympanum of the right portal of the South Porch.
Panels 27 and 28: Angel with censer
One either side of panel 26 is a panel in which an angel (haloed, barefooted) stands swinging a censer had holding a large bowl. At one side of the panel is a stylized cloud. Delaporte suggests that the artists used the same cartoon both panels.
