Description
North Porch, Central Portal
Right Jambs: The Old Testament Prophet Elijah - Detail
On the socle, a small figure of a man holding a scroll looks upwards toward Elijah. Katzenellenbogen believes this represents Elisha catching hold of Elijah’s cloak as he ascends to Heaven in the Chariot of Fire (II Kings, 2:11-13). According to Katzenellenbogen, this prefigures the Ascension of Christ (Katzenellenbogen, p. 65)
