Panel 05- Herod and his advisors
This panel and Panel 6 form a two-panel scene of the Magi before Herod (Matthew 2:1-8).
The scene takes place in an interior- there are two arches of an arcade separated by a column with a carved capital. Herod (crowned) sits at right on a seat and holds a scepter. He gestures toward the Magi in panel 6. Two men sit under the arch at left. They are bearded and one of them wears a “Jew's cap”. One of them appears to be reading a scroll. Probably they are the “chief priests and the scribes” referred to in Matthew 2:4-6 whom Herod summoned to learn about Old Testament prophecies concerning the birthplace of Christ.
