Panel 15: An angel shows Gad a palace in Heaven
Panels 14-6 show the episode of the death and resurrection of King Gundophorus’ brother Gad.
Before this episode began, Gundophorus, King of India, had imprisoned Thomas for giving alms and building churches with funds intended for the construction of a royal palace.
This panel probably shows Gad, in Heaven, being shown a palace by an angel. Gad (barefooted) stands at left, beside an angel (haloed, barefooted) who gestures toward a structure that takes up the right side of the panel. The structure, which resembles classical Roman architecture, stands on an arcade. Above the arcade are three stories, each with two arches. Under each arch can be seen the head and torso of a nude, golden figure wearing a crown. Four of these figures raise their hands in an “orant” position of prayer or praise; the other two clasp their hands together.
The exact interpretation of this panel is unclear. Perhaps it illustrates the Gospel of John, Chapter 14, verse 2 “In my Father’s house there are many mansions…” Perhaps it refers to the rewards that Thomas has created in Heaven by his good works.
