Panel 23 Elijah and the Widow of Sareptha (III Kings 17: 9-16)
The Lord told the prophet Elijah to go to Sareptha, where a widow would feed him. He found the woman gathering wood. She had only a little meal in a pot and oil in a cruet, but she made a cake for him. The amount of meal and the oil did not diminish in their containers, and the widow was able to use it to make food for herself and her son from then on.
Elijah (bearded, haloed) stands at right. In one hand he holds a phylactery with his name ([ELIA]S PROFETA). With the other hand, he gestures toward the woman standing at right, who holds two sticks of wood across each other. Behind her stands her son. In the background is an arcade –above it are a roof and a tower (the city of Sareptha?).
See panel 24 for the continuation of this story.
