Description
The Pantaleon Window
Delaporte no. 40, Deremble-Manhes no. 11
Among the early scholars of Chartres, there was some controversy over whose life is represented in this window. Bulteau thought it represented the life of S. Quentin, and de Lasteyrie thought it represented lives from a variety of martyrs. However, Delaporte identified the subject as the life of Pantaléon, the patron saint of physicians and midwives. During the Middle Ages, his relics were at St. Denis at Paris and at Lyons. Nine lessons to him were found in the 10th century Chartres lectionary (mss 507, fol. 231 and in the 12th century lectionary at Chartres (mss 500 fol. 127v). Though he was mostly venerated in the East, Manhes-Deremble reports that illuminated cycles of his life were found in an 11th century manuscript at Berlin (Staatsbibl. Phil. 1874, ff, 45v,47, 48v, 49, 50r, 51v, 52) and in a 12th century manuscript at Wolfenbüttel.
