6. Martyrdoms of Gervase and Protias
Gervase (Gervasius) and Protias (Protasius) were twins and children of martyrs. They were martyred in Milan, though the exact date of their deaths is disputed. In 386, St. Ambrose had built a new church in Milan. He needed relics to consecrate it, so he prayed, and the resting place of Gervase and Protias was revealed to him.
A tall figure of an executioner stands at left. One of the martyrs stands at right, while the other lies on the ground. Because of the poor condition of this panel, it is difficult to tell which saint is which, though Gervase was scourged to death, while Protias was pierced by a lance.
