Trumeau- General View of Base
There are two levels on the base of the trumeau. The top shows , at left, a man in a short tunic with a basket of loaves of bread of a type associated with alms given to the poor. At right kneels a man made on a much larger scale than the other figure. This is generally thought to represent Peter Mauclerc, the Count of Dreux, who was also the patron of the large rose window in the South Transept.
The lower level shows a man and a woman giving alms. The woman wears fashionable thirteenth century garments. They are often supposed to be Peter Mauclerc, the Count of Dreux and his wife. See Williams for a discussion of these figures.
