Description
Miscellaneous Sculpture: Exterior
Angel holding a sundial.
South side of the south tower of west façade (Clocher Vieux)
This is a twentieth century reproduction- the original is in the crypt. (See FCSP19600900 For an early twentieth century photo showing the original in place, see FCSVE4100110).
Many scholars think that the body of the angel was originally on the Royal Portal. Some think that, because it is taller than the other jamb statues there, that it was the trumeau statue of the central portal. Miller suggests that its subject matter may have been John the Baptist. The wings were added later. The angel holds a sundial with the date 1528.
