Panel 7: Bath of the infant Nicholas
According to legends, the newborn Nicholas, when he was being bathed for the first time, said that he would drink his mother's milk only once on Wednesday and once on Friday.
The naked baby (haloed) stands in a bath that is reminiscent of a baptismal font- he holds a small cloth in one hand. On each side is a seated woman who bathes him. The one at left has her feet on a footstool; the one at right sits on an ornate chair and holds a round jug. In the background is an elaborate arcade with carved capitals and curtains hanging from the arches (perhaps indications of Nicholas’ parents’ wealth).
