5: St. Lawrence martyred on a grill
St. Lawrence, one of the seven deacons of the Roman Church, was martyred in 258 during the persecution of Valerian. His cult was extremely popular. His Life was in two of the lectionaries of Chartres: one from the 10th century (mss 507, f. 254r) and one from the 12th century (mss 500, f. 141v). His martyrdom appears in the nave clerestory (Delaporte no. 171, Deremble-Manhes no. 139b) and on a grisaille window in the choir (Delaporte no. 47, Deremble-Manhes no. 25a). He is also depicted as one of the jamb statues on the left portal of the South Porch (the “Martyrs Portal”)
Lawrence (naked) lies on a large grill with flames underneath it. At left stands a man whose head and arm have been broken off, but who may have been beating the saint,
