Panel 20: The Deposition (Matthew 27:53-6l; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-55; John 19:38-42)
MODERN
At center, two men are removing the body of Christ (halo with cross, loincloth) from the green cross. The nails have been removed from His hands and His body sags forward and to the left. A man is supporting it (Joseph of Arimathea?). He holds the body in a cloth (this recalls the medieval custom of not holding precious religious objects directly, but in a cloth). To the right of the cross a man in a round cap (Nicodemus) kneels and uses pincers to pull a nail from one of Christ’s feet. There is a nail through each foot (this is a Byzantine convention- most western Crucifixion scenes have one nail through both feet).
The Virgin Mary (halo) stands to the left, holding one of Christ’s hands to her cheek. St. John (halo) stands to the right.
