Panel 8: Pantaleon before the Emperor Maximien
Pantaleon is accused by jealous colleague. At right the Roman Emperor Maximien (crowned, holding a scepter) sits on elaborate throne with a footstool. His hand pulls at the fastening of his mantle, a gesture associated with the upper class. Pantaleon (haloed, tonsured) stands at center raising his hands toward the Emperor (in supplication?). At left is a man, probably one of Pantaleon’s accusers, who has one of his hands on Pantaleon’s shoulder and raises the other toward the Emperor.
