Description
The northernmost of a row of figures on the upper level of the west side of the South Porch. These figures are thought to represent Old Testament kings- possibly the ancestors of Christ (Houvet, p. 13) . A statue of King David stands on a tree growing from the sleeping figure of Jesse - whose eyes are closed and who reclines on a bed. According to the prophet Isaiah, Jesse would be the ancestor of the Virgin Mary, and therefore of Christ. (Isaiah 11:1 " And there shall come forth a rod out of the root of Jesse, and a flower shall rise up out of his root.")
