Description
South Porch- Left Pillar of Left Portal
East Face-Martyrdoms
5. Martyrdom of Eustace and his family.
Eustace was a general under the Roman Emperor Trajan. One day, while hunting, he came upon a stage with a crucifix between its horns, which spoke and told him to convert to Christianity. After he and his family underwent a series of separations and other trials, they were martyred together.
Eustace and his family are broiled in a brazen bull. The bull is parallel to the plane of the panel. At right stands a man using bellows to fan the fire underneath the bull. In the bull sit Eustace, his wife and his sons.
St Eustace is also the subject of a window in the nave (Delaporte no. 62, Deremble-Manhes no. 43) as well as one in the North Transept Clerestory (Deremble-Manhes no. 115, Delaporte no. 137). Bugslag has suggested that the leftmost figure on the left jamb of the left portal of the south porch may be St. Eustace as well.
