Description
Work on this sculpture began in 1930, as a granite bust. It subsequently expanded into a monument in gray and pink granite, 32 meters in height, and was placed in front of the Bol'shoi Theater. A variation of the monument, made from a single block of stone, was exhibited in New York. By a decree of the Moscow Soviet of People’s Deputies on Oct. 24, 1991, the monument was removed and placed in this park.
