Biography
Robert "Joe" Jurich was born in Wilmerding, Pennsylvania, in 1929. He was at one time the Chief Steward of United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) Local 610 at Westinghouse Airbrake Company’s Airbrake Division in Wilmerding. On November 1, 1981, approximately 3,700 UE members voted by a majority to walk off the job in protest of the company’s contract proposals during collective bargaining. Local 610 settled on a contract with Westinghouse in May 1982, gaining modest wage increases and other benefits at a time when other unions agreed to concessions during negotiations. Jurich also became a member of the Denominational Ministry Strategy, which was a Pittsburgh-based group that targeted banking and manufacturing corporations within Pittsburgh as the primary reason behind the region's deindustrialization.
Collection Scope and Content Notes
This collection is comprised of scrapbooks of clippings that are mainly from Pittsburgh and McKeesport daily newspapers. The scrapbooks document the progress of the UE Local 610 Airbrake Strike that took place between 1981 and 1982. Two other scrapbooks include clippings regarding the Denominational Ministry Strategy. The rest of the scrapbooks are concerned with regional labor, and some national and international labor topics, from 1982 to 1990.
