Biography

Geoffrey Bauman was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 24, 1941 and moved to Pittsburgh with his parents ca. 1951. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1972 where he proceeded to earn a M.A. in history, and then began to pursue a Ph.D. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Peace and Freedom Center, Vets for Peace, and Students for a Democratic Society(SDS). In 1969, he was instrumental in effecting the split within the SDS which resulted in the formation of the Revolutionary Socialist Union. As of January, 1976, he had withdrawn from the Ph.D. program to work for a textile union in New York City. Geoffrey Bauman collected materials from organizations that he was either a member of or interested in, and this group of materials reflect both his involvement and the political climate of the time.
