Collection Scope and Content Notes

The collection contains correspondence, memoranda, studies, surveys, publications, reports, legal opinions, maps, plans and documents of Chief Engineer, Joseph White, concerning the Civic Light Opera, Greater Pittsburgh Airport, and traffic and transit issues of Pittsburgh, McKeesport, and Clairton from 1935-1956.

The information concerning the construction of the Civic Light Opera involves site studies and surveys and a report on transportation and parking facilities. Also included is the will of Henry C. Frick which states that, "No building or buildings shall ever be erected within said tract of land (Frick Park) which shall materially interfere with the use of the same as a park." The information regarding the Greater Pittsburgh Airport contains various maps with population census data and traffic count reports. The information on traffic and transit deals with traffic surveys, relocation, reconstruction, and improvement of roads and bridges. The legal opinions involving traffic and transit concern the right of vehicular access to property by means of highways and outdoor advertising. There is also a publication, Urban Traffic Forum, which addresses the issue of traffic congestion.
