The Burgwin Family was established in America by John Burgwin, the son of a wealthy landowner in South Wales, Great Britian. The family settled in the Carolinas in the 1750s and was involved in the state legislature. Hill Burgwin (1825-1898), the youngest of John Burgwin's 10 children was born in 1825. In 1847 he was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court, and after practicing for a while at Elizabeth City, he moved to Pittsburgh. Hill Burgwin was a prominent barrister and businessman in Pittsburgh in the last half of the 19th century, serving as counsel to the Mechanics National Bank of Pittsburgh; solicitor, vice-president, and member of the board of trustees at Dollar Savings Bank; and director of the Connellsville Railroad Company. He owned "Hasell Hill"- a mansion and large amount land in what is now known as Hazelwood. Burgwin Elementary School is located on land purchased from the Burgwin Estate. He was also very active in the church, holding a deed to a pew at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, PA.
This collection consists primarily of correspondence, genealogies, clippings, and memorabilia of the Burgwin Family, 1844-1963. The collection also includes correspondence, genealogies, clippings, and memorabilia of families that were related to the Burgwin family including Audubon, Bakewell, Holland, Hughart, James, McCandless, Nash, Ormsby, Page, Phillips, and Wharton Families. The records are photocopies of originals held by Howard J. Burgwin of Pittsburgh PA.
