The Allegheny County Committee on Fair Employment Practice was formed in March, 1945 under the co-chairmanship of Judge Joseph A. Richardson and Walter S. Buchanan to promote education in fair employment practices. The collection includes minutes of general meetings, correspondence, financial reports, contributors lists, a memorandum book of the Executive Secretary, an activities folder on behalf of FEPC legislation, newspaper releases and clippings, and photographs.

History

The Allegheny County Committee on Fair Employment Practice, formed in March, 1945 under the co-chairmanship of Judge Joseph A. Richardson and Walter S. Buchanan, promoted education in fair employment practices.

Members of the founding committee included Mrs. Frederick B. Chalfant, Mabel Gillespie, Dr. Willard E. Hotchkiss, Bishop Author B. Kinsolving, the Reverend L.B. Moseley, the Reverend N.H.R. Moor, W.T. Poole, E.L. Martin, John B. Collins, Maurice R. Moss, David McDonald, Mrs. J.L. Reizenstein, Robert Lieberman, and Sterling Chavis.

The Committee organized support for Pennsylvania General Assembly House Bill 354, introduced by Homer S. Brown (Democrat, Pittsburgh) in the 136th session, 1945, concerning Fair Employment Practices.


Collection Scope and Content Notes

The collection includes minutes of general meetings from 1945-46, correspondence from 1945-46 and 1950, financial reports, contributors lists, a memorandum book of the Executive Secretary, an activities folder on behalf of FEPC legislation, newspaper releases and statements, and newspaper clippings. The collection also contains material relating to the Pennsylvania Committee for FEPC (1945-46) and Americans for Democratic Action, Pittsburgh Chapter of Roosevelt Day Dinners (1950-1954).

Scope and Content Notes:

The letters in this series primarily concern the association's activities on behalf of the Pennsylvania General Assembly (the 136th Session in 1945) House Bills 354, 620 and Senate Bill 444 concerning the Fair Employment Practices Committee. The correspondence also deals with the Mass Meeting, North Side on April 20, 1945, called to support the passage of FEPC legislation, and the FEPC Dinner held in 1950.
