History
Benjamin F. Jones purchased a share in American Iron Works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1851. Later, he was joined by James H. Laughlin to form what would become J&L Steel in 1861. Their mills included facilities in Hazelwood, south side Pittsburgh, and Aliquippa and were a competitor of Carnegie Steel Company. In 1974, Ling-Temco-Vought purchased Jones & Laughlin Corporation as part of LTV Steel and all production facilities were closed in 1989.
Collection Scope and Content Notes
This collection contains the diary of Benjamin F. Jones and documents the early years of Jones & Laughlin Steel. Also present are genealogical charts regarding Jone and James H. Laughlin. Histories of J & L Steel, as well as the iron and steel industry, are also included.
