Series II Unemployment and Union Organizing, 1936-1948

Scope and Content Notes:

Fleckenstein's unemployment and union organizing centered around his association with the WAI, Workers Alliance of Indiana, and his efforts to organize Toy and Novelty Workers, a campaign by the CIO beginning in 1937. In 1937, the Toy and Novelty Workers Organizing Committee of the United Novelty Workers Local Industrial Union #718 filed a suite against the Wayne Novelty Company of Decatur, Indiana. There are many letters concerning this case from January 19, 1937 to August 8, 1939, as well as newspaper clippings and handbills. An effort was also made to organize labor for political action. Folder 5 focuses on several elections in Illinois.
