Collection Inventory
Series I. First Deposit (1982), 1971-1982
|
Scope and Content Notes: This series holds administrative files from the organization of the center and subject files from the first ten years of its existence. The subject files are arranged mostly alphabetical by box and cover a wide range of topics. Much of the information here deals with Vietnam/Indochina, Jimmy Carter, world hunger, and opposition to the B-1 bomber. Extensive material pertaining to the International Year of the Woman (IYW) in 1977 is also found here.
The two microfilm reels were also filmed in 1982. They contain chronologically arranged bulletins, election ballots, leaflets, announcements, and invitations to various activities, as well as several publications, including:
-
The New People (monthly), v. 1, no. 1 - v. 11, no. 6
(February 1972 - June 1982)
-
Update (an occasional mid-month bulletin),
March 1973 - January 1975
-
CEASE (Catholics for an End to Asian Slaughter and Exploitation - irregularly published),
April 1972, December 1972, December 1973
-
Seven Days of Light (by the Sisters' Council, Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Thomas Merton Center - annual),
December 1972, December 1973
-
The Voice (Committee on Women, Diocese of Pittsburgh), v. 2, no. 1-4
(October, December 1977, February, October 1978); v. 3, no. 1-3
(March, October, November 1979); v. 4, no. 1-2
(April, June 1980)

Series II. Second Deposit (1993), 1971-1993
|
Scope and Content Notes: This series contains many periodicals, articles, publications, and correspondence from the 1980s that reveal the Merton Center's opposition toward President Reagan's domestic and foreign policy. Other items from this era include the River City Campaign (RCC), the Merton Center's nuclear freeze effort. The RCC organized gatherings, protests, and wrote articles and leaflets denouncing the military build-up, demanding that the money spent in defense be redirected to fight poverty. The RCC also worked to expose the large sums of money that corporations made through defense contracts. Indictments against Rockwell, Westinghouse, Nestle, and IBM are included.
The series also documents the Merton Center's activities in opposing military intervention and aid to what they viewed as corrupt regimes in Central America. Their effort to propagate a message of peace and unity resulted in the Merton Center's establishment of a Witness for Peace program, developing an ongoing dialogue between the Nicaraguan city of San Isidro and Pittsburgh. The series houses this correspondence. Events in the 1980s were held in solidarity with the persecuted in South Africa, and the series holds records of these, as well as meeting minutes of organizations formed to protest regional job loss. At the end of the series, Boxes 25 and 26 hold periodicals from the original 1982 accession. Some of them express the progressive wing of the Catholic Church which advocates Gay rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, and Central American land reform.

|
Scope and Content Notes: These records, mainly from the 1990s, document the center's opposition to Newt Gingrich's "Contract with America" legislation and welfare reform, reflecting the specifics of their impact in the Pittsburgh region. There are also alphabetical subject files covering a number of social and political issues, with a significant amount of material pertaining to peace advocacy and military issues such as nuclear waste. This series also contains the records of the Mobilization for Survival and Jobs with Peace initiatives of the 1980s, including correspondence and meeting minutes.

Series V. Fifth Deposit (2009), 1962-2009
|
Scope and Content Notes: This series contains a variety of Thomas Merton Center records from the years 1962-2009 and is organized into three subseries: Administrative Files, Subject Files and Audio/Visual. Administrative Files include records pertaining to the running of the Center. Subject Files include records pertaining to peace and social justice issues as well as a significant run of the Center’s peace and justice newspaper,
The New People, covering the years 1974-2008, though certain issues are missing, particularly from the 2000s. Audio/Visual includes photographs, slideshows, cassette tapes, sound reels, and VHS tapes, covering Center events and peace and social justice issues. Records are organized alphabetically within each subseries.
|
Subseries 1. Administrative Files 1980-2009
|
Scope and Content Notes: Documenting the organization and administration of the Thomas Merton Center, these records include: volunteer records; financial/budget documents; board/staff documents; Center projects; staff and member retreats; and celebrations such as the Center’s yearly award dinner recognizing an individual for their work in peace and social justice. A significant part of the subseries includes Giving Tree records, the alternative holiday gift shop run by the Center to support workers in third-world countries. The administration subseries includes materials from 1980 to 2009.

Subseries 2. Subject Files 1962-2008
|
Scope and Content Notes: These records in the subject files subseries span the Center's existence from 1962 to 2008. These files document the different regional and international peace and social justice issues the Thomas Merton Center brought awareness to, or organized against through projects and protests in an effort to bring about social change. Several folders are devoted to Pittsburgh-area projects that dealt with issues of racism, war, apartheid, hunger, the rights of women and children, and labor. Also included is a run of the Center’s newspaper,
The New People, which highlighted Center events, featured social justice articles, and acted as a source of information for other activists and like minded organizations on actions, campaigns, and events.
