Subseries 24. News Clippings

Scope and Content Notes: There are four sections of news clippings included in the Thornburgh archives.
During Dick Thornburgh's two terms as Governor, his staff collated and distributed daily newspaper clippings for the administration. These clippings from around the state, and nationally, enabled his team to keep their "finger on the pulse" of events and essentially document all the administration's positions and issues as presented by the media to the reading public. There is no doubt that every topic of note can be referenced here, as long as the researcher has at least an approximate date for a topic. For example, one could search the news releases available here online, and with the dates of notable events or actions of the administration, follow up with perusal of these clippings. It is also possible, for example, to have a date from speech or event files, and follow up with these clipping files. The Governor was generally well covered in the news, so events of note are usually found in the clippings and augment the background in the event files, for example.
These daily clippings are in chronological order and grouped by month. It is important to note that this section includes clippings that cover the transition period at the conclusion of Thornburgh's second term, January-June 1987.
The second section consists of
Republican Rumbles, clippings collated and distributed by the PA House of Representatives, spanning the entire two terms. These present issues and subjects in the media of specific interest to the Republican Party. Some of the newspapers included here are not regularly included in the daily clippings from the governor's office. These cover the entire eight years of the Thornburgh administration.
Next, there are ethnic clippings distributed by the Pennsylvania Heritage Affairs Advisory Commission. The date span of these files, although incomplete, ranges from January 1980 to December 1984, arranged by year.
Lastly there are
The Editors Speak, a publication of Mid-Atlantic Newspaper Services, a business affiliate of Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association (PNPA). Clearly editorial opinion differs in content and intent from daily news reporting and therefore is of additional interest. The date range is 1979-1986, arranged by year.
