Subseries 23. Correspondence

Scope and Content Notes: The Governor's correspondence files consist of chronological copies of all Mr. Thornburgh's correspondence to constituents, friends, acquaintances, students, and responses to those writing to the Governor on myriad issues of concern and interest. They were commonly referred to as "reading files," meaning that these were carefully read and/or reviewed by the governor. The date range is February 1979-January 1987. Each month of correspondence is additionally separated into three categories: Boards and Commissions, Greetings, and General Correspondence. Within each category the correspondence is in chronological order.
The original correspondence to the administration is held in the Historical and Museum Commission's Governor Thornburgh Archive. The copies here represent the Governor's response to letters for which we do not have the original, although many letters found their way into departmental and other issue files. Additionally included here, of course, are letters originated and signed by the Governor.
